Replica Reconstruction
Reconstructing the Antikythera Mechanism
After the study of the visual photographs, the AMRP Computed Tomographies of the Mechanism’s Fragments, the calibrated/dimensioned digital reconstructions of the parts, we reconstructed all of the Mechanism’s bronze parts in our machine shop, then we assembled them and we created a number of Research Quality functional reconstructions of the Antikythera Mechanism.
For our reconstruction replicas we applied the Protocol of Mandatory Parameters for a Research Quality bronze reconstruction of Antikythera Mechanism. The gears, the shafts, the axles were constructed by using simple handle and electrical conventional tool machines without the use of computer driven machines (CNC/Computer Numerical Control) in order to investigate/approach the way of the parts’ construction by the ancient Craftsman..

A functional reconstruction model of the Antikythera Mechanism. On the left, the front face of the Mechanism. The Lunar pointer aims in opposite position to the Golden sphere-Sun, means a Full Moon phase. On the right, the Back face of the Mechanism. With the two spirals (Metonic, top), and Saros (bottom).

A functional reconstruction model of the Antikythera Mechanism, accompanied with the Front and Back cover plates of the main body. On the Back cover plate (on the right), the Instruction Manual of the device, is partially preserved. On the Front cover plate (on the left), the astronomical theory for the Cosmos during the Hellenistic era is also partially preserved.

Close –up for the gears’ process with triangular tooth shape, as the original gears of the Antikythera Mechanism.

Placement and testing the wooden casement of the Antikythera Mechanism. The design was based on the wooden remains of the ancient prototype.

The central front part of the Antikythera Mechanism was based on the internal wooden casement.
